Very good. Chest strap is a little snug on my 48″ chest., March 17, 2010
This review is from: Timex Ironman Men’s Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor Watch, Grey/Red, Full Size (Sports)

Watch is the same as you would expect from a Timex Ironman. The watch is very comfortable. It looks like a regular sports watch. It appears to be well made. I am sure that it will only last about 2 years but that is alright for the money. Usually the timex ironmans tend to get beat up looking before they actually die. The interface is very intuitive. It works like a standard Ironman. You can display the heart rate in many different ways. I like that the time is visible while the heart rate monitor is functioning. I also like that you can display the heart rate in a bunch of different ways. I don’t really use all of the fancy features. I did use it once just to see how it worked- it worked fine. (Avg hr, peak hr, blah blah). All that I do is keep my heart rate between 140-160. I would not count on the calorie counter to work. The recovery heart rate is a handy feature that is really easy to use. I think that measuring recovery heart rate is one of the best measures of heart health.

I bought this watch to replace an Omron that I bought off of Amazon for $32. The Omron was alright, but it was telling my that my heart rate was 220 plus beats a minute once in a while. And I wanted to see if I was going to have a cardiac arrest. The timex is coded, so I don’t get any interference from the equipment or other heart monitors. The timex road trainer is superior in every way to the omron.

The only real downside is that the chest strap is a little short for big guys. I am 6’2″ 240 lbs with a wide chest (48″) and it is a little snug on me. I am hoping that it stretches out after a little while. This is a small annoyance that I don’t mind dealing with for how well this watch works. Most people won’t need to worry about that. I would say that only if you are bigger than me that it would be a real problem. It is nice to leave the watch on all day and then just throw the strap on when I go to the gym. During the day, the watch reminds me to hit the gym after work!

The heart rate is very accurate and reliable on this watch. It works consistently with no problems what so ever. This is definately worth the extra money. Using a heart rate montitor is a must to get the most out of cardio workouts. I will always use one from now on.

I had a polar a few years ago, and that thing was no where near as user friendly as this watch. This thing beats my old polar in every way. Also- I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the polar outside of the gym!

I had previously purchased a heart rate monitor with an analog transmitter system, and it would only work if it was nowhere near any electrical equipment (e.g., fluorescent lighting, television, or treadmill). The Timex heart rate monitors (including this unit) that have a digital transmission eliminate this electrical interference issue.

I have never been particularly fond of excessive bells and whistles, perhaps because I am technologically challenged–I have never found a use for all the extra features, much less been able to figure out how to use them. This unit does lack some features that some users may have preferred to have– it doesn’t retain more than one workout in memory, for example. I am also unsure whether the transmitter is compatible with treadmills and other equipment that work with Polar brand transmitters. But if you want a reliable heart rate monitor that provides real-time guidance of where your heart rate is, then this unit fits the bill.

Very accurate right out of the box, and it’s very light too!, April 26, 2008

My initial reaction when looking at the S1 Foot Pod was, “No Way”. I mean, it looks like some type of fancy pedometer. And I use one, the Omron HJ-112 Digital Premium Pedometer, and I know it’s not totally accurate when it comes to distance because it’s based on your pre-set stride.

To my surprise, this S1 Foot Pod is very accurate, right out of the box, and without calibration! How do I know? I went for a walk today with the Foot Pod and my Magellan eXplorist 210 Handheld GPS, which has the accurate WAAS system. The discrepancy between the two devices was 0.025 miles. That’s very small! And with no calibration? It’s even more unbelivable! For me and distance logging, tenths of a mile are all I’m concerned about anyway.

As far as weight, I didn’t even notice it. It’s very light and I put it on my left foot, which is not my dominant foot. Size-wise, I initially felt a little embarassed because the S1 is just a little bit smaller than a Twinkie, but now it doesn’t bother me. It’s so light that I don’t even notice that it’s there.

Battery life is rated at 20 hours.

One word of caution: Just make sure to verify that the unit is off when you’re done. Press the red button and hold it down until the green light goes off. And double check it with your Polar watch, just to be sure.

Highly recommended for walkers, joggers, and runners!

Update: It’s one year later and I’ve got this now calibrated to about 0.015 miles. Just make sure to do your initial calibration on a flat surface with no hills. And it’s best to calibrate it every time you switch shoes as well. Overall I’m still very impressed!

Accurate and easy to use – a great investment, September 28, 2007

I’ve had the S1 foot pod for about a month and used it for about 120 miles or so of running. I’ve found it to be very accurate out of the box and easy to use. I am not-sensitive enough to notice the weight differential between my feet and I forget it’s there. I’ve ran in a few rain showers (not downpours, but definitely some rain) and not had any issues with the S1. While the S1 is over $100, it’s a great investment in terms of the wealth of data and the flexibility it offers. It’s helping me “learn” pace in terms of cadence and effort into actual min/mile numbers and it offers the flexibility of performing a speed workout anywere. I highly recommend the S1 if you are someone who is training for specific time goals in races. If not, then you may not need such a device – but then you probably wouldn’t be here reading reviews would you?

This thing keeps me motivated to run since I want to see those miles pile up week after week! While calibrating it on an indoor track, I found that it was very accurate as is. Only complaint is that it is somewhat pricey.

Walking is Free!

By: K. Dilworth

Walking has many health benefits and it does not cost a thing to do it. For your health and motivation, be determined to fit walking into your schedule even if you can't find the time to do anything else. However, first make sure you have a full physical and get permission from your doctor to engage in this activity. Also, for safety reasons, especially if you are a female, find a safe neighborhood, or a populated park to walk in where there are plenty of other people around. You can also form a walking club with your neighbors, or friends to make it fun. Make it a goal to be accountable to each other to walk at least three times a week. It's great exercise for your heart, can reduce stress, as well as lower your blood pressure, and help you lose weight if you walk consistently. We have included some of our favorite health gadgets on our website which you may find useful in your fitness endeavors. Most of all, just get out and walk. It's fun and it's free!

Next week, I'll share with you specifically why I started walking!
